Your post made me think of a lesson from my Buddhism class last night about discipline. Our teacher talked about how in the western world we associate discipline with harshness and getting up to go to the gym early, like you mentioned. In Buddhism, discipline is associated more with softness and flexibility. You are being responsive to your body's needs and I think a Buddhist would identify that as discipline. You're not wasting your energy fighting. You're making prudent and difficult decisions about what is possible.

I'm sorry it's so hard. You have so much value. I love your writing and I appreciate you sharing this very difficult stuff.

I felt this in my soul, vöx. I know that stomach-churning humiliation of asking my mother for money at the age of 57. I had been financially independent for over 40 years before my disability benefits were stopped last year. I had received them for ten years, and prior to that I worked as a nurse in the NHS, and worked in different jobs between the ages of 15 and 23 when I started my training.

Even in Britain, which is far too much like the US than I am comfortable with, disability, physical or mental, is treated as a personal failure, and there are those people who just don’t understand what it is like to live in a body that can no longer do what it used to be able to do. The “Have you tried….[insert strategy of choice here, including, but not limited to: mindfulness, journaling, exercise, just trying harder] just adds to the guilt and shame.

I know in my heart that everyone, regardless of gender, race, religion, and ability, are worthy of dignity and respect, but when we are flooded with messages from society and politics, that tell us we are worthless we do internalise that.

I am not in any way excited about my future. In fact, I wish there wasn’t a future. People will say “this, too, shall pass”, but it never seems to.

Anyway, I am sorry to make it about me, but I am neurodivergent and it is my way of saying “I get it”.

Sending gentle hugs, as always ❤️
